Currently, I am in my third and final year in the Masters in Design for Stage and Film program at New York University. I am excited to finish this degree and begin making a career in the Film and Entertainment Industry. I am hungry and eager to jump in, work hard, and push myself into new endeavors.
My background is in architecture. I went to the School of Architecture at Syracuse University. This five-year professional degree program provided me with a valuable design-based education. It also made me aware that the ways in which we experience our environment impacts our lives. It was at Syracuse that I first acquired my interest in designing for theater and was urged to take Design for Theatrical Productions courses. Shortly after, I began designing sets for both on- and off-campus theater productions in Syracuse. In my final year, Syracuse Stage Production Co. asked me to design the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, directed by Michael Donald Edwards. This experience was fantastic and I have been designing for the stage ever since.
After graduating from Syracuse, I worked as an architect for a large architecture and engineering firm in Rochester, NY. While working there, I produced 3D animations of many of the firm’s projects. The process of creating a 3D model, setting up the lighting, animating a camera path, rendering an image file sequence, and then editing the audio effects, sound tracks and camera transitions fascinates me. I became very interested in film and realized it was a field I should pursue. During this time, Rochester hosted the High Falls Film Festival where I attended a lecture by Stuart Craig and engaged him in a conversation. My discussion with him helped me realize that production design for film is a career that will blend elements of my architectural education with my passion for scenic design. A few months after, I applied to the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.
The past two years in my graduate program have been an intensive exploration of my abilities and design as a process. I have worked on designs for graduate short films, graduate acting department productions, and even Tisch Dance. The pace that working on film projects requires is so dynamic and it fuels my creativity in a way I am just discovering. I want to continue to contribute my talents to this art form. Please help me realize this desire and allow me any opportunity to be challenged, explore and be excited.
